Joining the governing board of a different school or trust offers a fantastic development opportunity for education professionals. By contributing your experience and expertise, you will provide effective support and challenge to another school, and the school where you work will benefit from the insight and skills you develop.
Research undertaken by NfER for the DfE showed that three of the top seven skill sets sought by governing boards are education related: namely – local, regional and national policy knowledge; educational expertise; and school improvement expertise.
To help meet this need, the National Governance Association and Inspiring Governance launched the Educators on Board campaign and have worked with a range of brilliant organisations and individuals to get hundreds more educators….on boards! Could you now join the many education professionals that have volunteered as school governors?
Here’s why you should volunteer
- ✅ It’s a substantial, varied and valuable professional development opportunity
- ✅ Develop and extend your strategic leadership skills, personal skills and job related skills in an education environment
- ✅ Get a strategic view of a school or trust: you’ll oversee budgets, human resources and long-term planning
- ✅ Build networks and connect with other education professionals and people from the wider community
- ✅ Broaden and deepen your knowledge and understanding of education issues and how they affect schools
- ✅ Essential experience for aspiring future leaders
This is not just an opportunity for teachers – if you work in educational research, policy, delivery, Further or Higher education, or supply services to schools – this is a great development opportunity for you too.
